A Day on the Boat
By Katie, 12, Kalamazoo, MI, USA
My family and I own a speed boat that we take out on the greenish-blue Kentucky lakes. Our boat is white and blue. He or she (we never decided really) was called Sea Ray. Sea Ray was built for twelve, but we never really obeyed those rules. We'd had fourteen people on the boat, and nothing really happened!
I would normally sit up front so I could feel the chilly wind in my blond hair. It was very nice, because even if you were wet from swimming you would get dry almost immediately by the rush of the warm summer air.
On that day, we were boating on a lake we'd never been on before. We have a tube we pull behind the boat. Only one kid could fit in the tube, you'd have to sit in the tube on your knees, and you could feel the pressure from the tube pushing against your legs while the boat sped through the waves, and you would fly through the air and hit the water when a big wave came. What extreme fun!
We'd been on on the lake for a couple of hours already. I was up in the bow of the boat. I had my eyes closed and I was up on my knees, which was very dumb because my balance was off. I also, wasn't holding on, so when it happened, I had no chance.
At the time, my little seven-year-old brother, Andrew, was out in the tube. We were going along at about thirty miles an hour I think. I loved that speed, it was perfect!
We have a strict rule in our boat that I had never considered sensible until that day. No being on the boat while it's moving without a life jacket.
I didn't like that rule at the time, because our life jackets would come up and squeeze us around the shoulders like a fresh orange! SO uncomfortable. But... no one ever said being safe was going to be comfortable!
But it was a rule, and my dad is tough on important rules such as that one, once he declares it, it's in there, hard like cement. I never knew how right he was.
My dad was driving the boat, when, up in the front, I happened to open my eyes a few seconds. In those few seconds I saw a stick, that was sticking straight up out of the water. I didn't give it any thought. Bad decision. Because if you think about it, how can a stick, stick straight out of the water? It would have to be attached to something... maybe... a LOG! But like I said, I didn't put two and two together.
So right before we went over the 'Stick', I realized the truth and yelled a half second before hitting the log.... 'LOG!' And then 'BOOM!' and 'OUCH!' and then 'SPLASH!' This is what I was told later happened.
When the Sea Ray hit the log, it jerked the boat! The motor came bouncing up and hit my mom and little sister, Courtney, who were sitting in the back seats. My little brother, Andrew, who was in the tube, in the got scraped by the log and was yelling.
'OOUUCH!' he exclaimed.
I hadn't been holding on, so when the Sea Ray lurched, I toppled into the waves. And underneath the moving boat! The water was deep, and I thundered into it, like a bowling ball!
I felt the rush of air and the sudden chill of the water. I bounced right to the surface and took a breath.
Thankfully, my dad, who was driving, saw me fall, and quick turned the propeller off, which could have easily sliced me into bits. Because of the life jacket I was okay, and started to tread water.
I yelled loudly, 'I'm okay, I'm okay!'
My mom was confused as to why I was in the water. My dad took my hand and helped me back into the boat. I was very lucky for two reasons. One is, that my dad quickly turned the sharp propeller off, and second, that I was wearing a life jacket.
After we hit the log, my dad jumped into the water, and pulled the log away from the path of other boats.
We than continued boating for the rest of the bright, summer afternoon. (February 2009)

Katie and my Family
By Katie, 9, Valpo, Chile
Hi my name is Katie and I like to write a lot. I am 9 years old and go to school at WTS. WTS stands for Woshington Township. My teacher's name is Mrs.Miller. She helps me a lot and so does my mom and my dad.
It is extremely busy at my house. I play soccer and softball. My twin sister Kortney plays soccer too and she plays softball.
Lauren, my sister who is 11 years old plays volleyball. Lauren teaches me how to play because I am not a good player.
My cousin Sam/Sammie acts all the time. She lives with me and she babysits me and my sisters too. It gets boring because all she does is read, watches TV, goes on the computer, and sleeps.
My mom works as a doctor. She is pretty in her outfit she wears for work. My dad is a chip man. He works at Fretolay. We get a lot of chips. Sometimes my dad gets home at 5:00 o'clock.
My bed time is at 8:00 or 8:30. I might need to do my homework so that takes me some time to do that. That is about my and my family so bye! (September 2008)

Me and the Future
By Tom, 10, Carlisle, Cumbria, UK
Dear Diary
I am 10 and have been for quite a while but I'm still really far away from being 11. Right now being 10 is great because you are 1 year away from Year Six so you do loads of new things in Science like bunsen burners and sound. The worst things are preparing for SAT's next year, it is a real pain. You get harder lessons but the teachers do help a lot. Still, it will help me for 10 years in the future won't it? If you work hard you get the job you want, which is a lawyer if you are me. The reason I want to be a lawyer is because you help people.
In 2018 I think we might have computers where when you are on the Internet you say, 'In Google type in Kids on the Net then search,' and the computer does that, then you say 'Click on the top one' and it does.
I think phones in the future will work similar like the computer. You say 'ring this number' then say the number and it rings it, plus you would have headphones that sends what they say into your brain so no one else can hear what they say. Then you think what you would say then it sends that into their brain. I wonder if that will be true? What do you think? (August 2008)

Braille
By Christina, 14, NY, USA
What is it? Some people ask me.
I tell them, 'It is six little dots all stuck tougher making a rectangle.'
Then people ask me, 'How do you read it?'
I answer this question by saying, 'I slide my fingers across the page of dots from left to right and I go down the page. Reading the dots.'
Some people also ask me, 'How do you remember what all those dots mean?'
I answer them by saying, 'I remember them the same way you remember your letters.'
I love Braille and think it is unique. Next time you are somewhere look for little dots on signs or maybe a classmates paper and you will know that it is Braille. (August 2008)

Three days in the life of a Young Writer
By Padya, 12, Dhaka, Bangladesh
January 1, Monday I got this diary from mum as a New Year's present. She says it'll help me improve my writing. These are my resolutions: 1. I'll write more than I've ever written 2. I'll get published 3. I'll read a lot
January 2, Tuesday School does not start till the 8th...I don't get why I have to go to school and learn so many subjects if I am only interested in writing. Mum says I have to get good grades in everything if I want to end up at a good college. She's probably right. I've started "Born too short" by Dan Elish today. It's really good.
January 3, Wednesday It rained all day today. The cold wind and the rain was so annoying. So I comforted myself with this poem:
"O Sky please don't cry Let the wind blow your tears away Just like it blew my hat off today."
I think I'm getting good. Lucy, my best friend is quite confident that I'd be globally known one day. I hope she's right!! (July 2008)
