Dolphins

By Madison, 10, GA, USA

Dolphins are in danger. The main three ways they die is by humans. 0ne reason is they get trapped in fishing nets another is some people kill them on purpose. The last reason is not caused by humans, they get killed by other animals like sharks.

Here are some facts about dolphins:

Animal Shelters

By Sara , 15, Manchester NH, USA

Do you believe animal shelters are safer than your own household or the streets? Many dogs and cats end up having to live in an animal shelter. Each year about 6-8 million of cats and dogs are found and are put in a shelter. Not all of them live.

A recent study from their National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy (NCPPSP) shows why pets are put into shelters (PetRescue.com). For dogs the higher reason why are: moving, places not allowing them, or maybe too many other pets in the household. Reasons why cats are held into shelters are: moving, allergies in the family, the cost of maintenance, and the highest having too many other pets in the household.

Most animals that are put into the shelters are usually around the ages of 5 months to 3 years old. Most of them have never been to a vet, or have not received obedience training about the same amount of male dogs and female dogs and cats all put into shelters.

Owners represented a broad range of age ethnicity, education and income level, indicating continued efforts will need to reach wide and far into communities across the country. (Dr. Mosalmon, PetRescue.com)

If you choose to want to help a lost or stray dog or cat you need to be prepared. If they bite you, you could get a disease. You will need to keep the stray away from any other animals. The first thing you should do is bring it to the vet, so it can be tested for anything. When you are at the vet you should ask them to scan the stray for microchips. A microchip is a metal chip inserted in the animal with an owner's information. That way you could see if it has an owner. The last thing you should do is go online to see if they are posted on a website showing a list of lost or missing animals.

Some shelters aren't so helpful. Most of the animals end up dying of starvation or a disease. Most shelters (77%) kill their animals for no reason. Some shelters don't treat them well. In Taiwan their shelter for dogs and cats are just a corner of a road where they have a big cage they stick them in and they don't get fed. (Animal Network)

If you see a dog or cat in need of help, follow my directions and help them find a new home. After all it's easier to blame others, to be a victim, than it is to analyze and solve the problem.(NAIA)

The Joys Of Reading

By Ayushmaan , 13 , New Delhi

Books! Books! Books!

Can our life be possible without books? The answer is definitely 'no'. Books are a treasure house of knowledge. We cannot live without books. They provide us with information about sports, media, current affairs, science and technology and much more. Anything you can think about can be found in books. Apart from fiction we can get to read about some interesting real life experiences of some famous sports persons, film stars, media personalities and many such people. Books are now coming in a series pack also. Take for example The Harry Potter Series by JK Rowling in which there are seven books out.

Mark Twain has rightly said-

'The man who does not read books has no advantage over the man who can't read them.'

Newspapers and magazines make for interesting reading. Newspapers give us in-depth detail about current affairs, sports, international news etc. Weekly magazines cover the whole week's news and provide us with leisure reading. The editorial page in newspapers has articles by reputed writers and provides us with valuable lessons to be learned in life. The reader can connect with the real life situations visualized by the writer.

Articles by writers like Jug Suraiya and Bachi Karkaria are high on the humour content give a boost to our otherwise low spirits. Supplements that accompany the main paper are a guide to food, fashion, tourism, and entertainment (movies, plays etc.) and provide us with an insight about the week's forthcoming events. They are colourful, bright and vivid. Interviews with celebrities help us get to know them better. Reviews about the week's latest flick or the new eatery in town or the newly launched music album are all present in the supplements.

Animal Testing

By Catriona, 10, Scotland

I think that animal testing is absolutley horrible! It is cruel, disrespectful and above all it hurts animals. Animal testing is putting any animals life at risk. They could die just so people can buy cosmetics. Testing beauty products on animals is wrong, wouldn't the world be so much better if people stopped it! I think it is dreadful, do you?

Emeril Lagasse

By Stormie, 12, TX, USA

Upbeat chef, Emeril Lagasse was born October 15, 1959 in the small town of Fall River, Massachusetts. He was raised by French-Canadian father, Emeril Jr., and Portuguese mother Hilda.

Before he was discovered, he worked in a pastry shop owned by his mother. Now he has opened over ten restaurants, such as Emeril's in New Orleans. He is a true role model. He is extremely talented. He knows how to cook in his own way, whether it's an Emeril original or a national favorite. He most definitely can get a crowd going on Emeril Live, his television show on the Food Network. People even pay 4,000 dollars to see him front row! That just shows how highly people think of him, and his cooking. In high school he was also a talented percussionist, and even got offered a full scholarship to The New England Conservatory of Music, but he turned them down to become a chef.

He is very creative with his styles of cooking. He has created his own Cumin spice and even a line of cooking equipment. He majors in French, Canadian, Portuguese, and New Orleans cooking. He tries his best to make his food creations good looking and full of flavor, all at once. His constant catchphrases and sentence structures such as 'BAM!' and, 'And now we're going from beginning to start,' give people the idea of the energy you need to cook. He is very proud of his cooking, and loves making it.

His thoughtful donations to many charities, including his own, the Emeril Foundation, have made a big impact on a lot of people's lives. His charity is for New Orleans, which he gives money to the ones who were affected by the flood. He also starred on the television show, 'Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?' where he donated his 125,000 dollar winnings to a charity program for children with learning disabilities.

His responsibility is great, due to his large chain of restaurants. He even has his own television show on the Food Network. He also stars in other shows, like 'Good Morning America' and cartoons in which he voices other characters. A daily show episode jokingly argued that Emeril could have done more to help New Orleans recover from Hurricane Katrina and failed to 'kick it up enough notches', when Emeril truly has made a superb impact on the hurricane problem.

Emeril is a great hardworking person. He has done some great things, and should be appreciated more than he already is. He has so many things to do at once. Television shows, his restaurants, charities. They are all just a small part of all the things he has done to help the world we live in.

Not only is he creative, responsible, talented, thoughtful, and hardworking, but he is an inspiration. He inspires not only adults but children to be chefs, just like him, and that proves how important he is to so many people. Even though some people know Emeril for being just a chef or even no one at all, he's still my role model.

Teachers

By Laura Jane, 11, Peterhead, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

You have your friends to chat with, your parents to care and love you, grans and grandads to adore you but what about teachers?

Teachers are like cream eggs hard on the outside and creamy and sweet on the inside, they are all different. Some come for experience and some have worked for long, some are stricter than others, some teach art, maths, language and others, some are tall, small or in between.

They all have the same job but with different methods, just like little chocolate cupcakes with different insides.

But over all they aren't half bad after all they are like chocolate cake!

Global Warming

In ten years time I believe the planet will be covered in water and the humans will adapt to the water and grow fins and gills and will live deep below the water. Although, this could not happen if we lower our carbon footprint. Save the planet or live under water.

Stop the bullying!

By Tesla, 10, Benton, MO, USA

Why do kids bully? I'll tell you why. There are lots of reasons why kids bully. They may have a hard life and think its funny to pick on people to get their spirits up. Or do it to be a big-shot. It's not funny and you're not being a big-shot. You are being hateful to someone whose life is like a laughing stock of the whole school because of you! Nice is all it takes. It is not a big deal to be nice to somebody. Please, help stop the bullying. (May 2008)

Sisters

By Aekam, 10, UK

Sisters are annoying,

Instantly embarrassing you in front of friends,

Sometimes you could hug them when they are being kind,

This is a chance in a million, as they are always a pest,

Even when they are ill, they are still a pain in the bum, because they take advantage of you by ordering you around.

Really sisters can be a handful, whatever age they are,

So if you have a sister I feel sorry for you!

An Honest Grade

By Charlene, 14, Walnut, CA, USA

In the midst of every decision a teenager makes in routine life, deciding to cheat never seems to be choice that students spend time dithering upon. Instead, they are completely blind to those they use shamelessly and usually fail to acknowledge the negative consequences their actions make upon others or even themselves - they only seem to be concerned with gain. They have turned deaf to childhood teachings like Cheaters never prosper, disregarded the ethics and morality of their actions, and most importantly, forgotten about the myriad of possibilities their choice will have upon their future.
Students cheat all the time, almost as if it is an inevitable act or a rite of passage in school. However, they seem to overlook the fact that while they have earned the credit and the grades by cheating, they have failed to absorb the material themselves. Teenagers might carelessly rebuke this by questioning the purpose of learning, as long as one achieves the grade. But everything in life - education, experiences, and even friends - can all be filtered down to a single category: the impact it makes on the future.
Grades only matter so much - it is a merely a mark of achievement. But there is no value in an accomplishment if it is falsely earned. Often times, friends think they are helping one another by 'borrowing' each other's papers; however, in reality, not only have they prevented their friends from gaining any current knowledge, but also, they are essentially hindering them from gaining any further knowledge either due to the rewards they earned effortlessly. Consequently, cheating is a common sight in the classroom - someone discovers a homework assignment due in 15 minutes, decides to innocently ask a friend to 'compare answers', and then frantically, without guilt, scribbles down someone else's hard work.
Students tend to not think about the morality and results of their actions; rather, they focus more on what their peers might think or the events happening in the present. As a result, they perceive cheating almost as a double standard: They look down upon those they see cheating yet, at the same time, create an excuse when they do it themselves, just to clear their own guilty conscience. Though many students have lost their way by resorting to cheating, there are those who have not succumbed to the superficial benefits of grades and can still remember that we should just be learning instead.

Spiders are Super

By Josiah, 7, Ashtabula, OH, USA

You see, spiders are super and they are very good biters. They like to bite people, only bad ones. They can fly in the air with their webs like a parachute. Their parachute gets the wind and that makes them fly. And spiders can catch things in their webs to eat like crickets and grasshoppers. People shouldn't eat grasshoppers. Some spiders even eat little birds. They make their own homes too - but it doesn't keep out the rain like ours does. Spiders are superheroes because they can do lots of things that people can't do and they keep ants and flies from getting in your house. (November 2007)

Fashion's Fashion

By Urusa, 13, Kuwait

Today's modern world doesn't rely on anyone for anything. Accept for the word that runs this world 'Fashion' from urban to rural, who doesn't know fashion? Nowadays everyone has a passion for fashion, fashion statements are even a bigger hit with celebrities. It has been around from when humans first came to their social senses. It's merely co-incidental that everyone craves for one trend observed in a celebrity and mixed and matched with another's style to set a new fashion. If someone today wears mismatched pairs of shoes in the East, then next thing we know it's on the Vogue tabloids in the West and soon all over the world. It's as simple to say that fashion basically has no description but is one's contemporary wish to be unique from the other to set a trend soon copied or re-defined by a dozen and set as fashions. What if some one wore a tee-shirt inside out, then the next thing 'in' will be wearing pants inside out, yah exactly what you're thinking is right, fashion is a contagious disease when it spreads it's everywhere it's huge but when it dies out at the roots it's totally 'last minute' - human talk referred to as not what people go for anymore. Fashion's not harmful but it shouldn't take over one's mind, coz if it desires it can do terrible things, like make us its slaves, to think who isn't a slave of fashion, we all are. We just want to fit in with the wacky amateurs of the glam and glitz arena and live out the 'grey' part! It is amazing how we set new trends, this summer people got so bored with micro-minis they finally decided to go totally opposite and called it elegant the new 'in' thing are volume skirts, and we had the metal accessories and metal ringed ornaments and now they shifted it from bronze heavy metal to light soft perky knit materials even knit clothes and call it the 'economical look' and many more from punk to pretty pink and from pink then green which is the new pink then green died out and people thought brown's the new celebrity look and from no socks to tights, hoof! Talk about confused hah! My advice to y'awl don't try to be a Fashion con artist if you don't really have passion for fashion but when we look through the rear view mirror then again we all set our own fashions and therefore all are Fashion con artists! Gender Equality

By H.W., 12, Seoul, South Korea

Gender equality is basically how equal men and women are in our society. Gender is something we're born with, and it's something we can't change. But lots of people are stuck doing something that they don't want to because of their gender. Sometimes they are so discouraged that they even have sex changing operations!

But the main question is: Why is gender equality important?

For a long time men tended to have a higher position than women in our society. Men were physically stronger than women, so naturally they took control.

But now those things have changed, and women are almost as equal as men are. Well, almost. You could still see things around you that prove that men and women aren't perfectly equal. Even at school girls are discriminated by teachers and boys. Take a look at gym classes at school. If it's free time girls are usually doing dodgeball or something similar while boys almost always play soccer or basketball. What about girls who want to excercise? What about athletic girls who want to play soccer? But nobody really says anything or seems to care at all, and girls are left feeling discouraged. Teachers sometimes say "Don't think I'm going to be easy on you because you're a girl," when they get angry. Are girls that much weaker than boys? Don't girls also have pride?

In the government, both in Korea and other countries, men almost always occupy the highest positions. Many countries such as Korea or the United States haven't had any female presidents. Before the 20th century most athletes were male - there were no women's soccer, basketball, or hockey teams.

Luckily things are changing. Women could do a lot of things they couldn't do in the old days. In many countries, more female leaders have been elected - for example, Canada, Germany, Finland, England, and Norway have all had female leaders. Even Asian countries have them too - Indonesia, Pakistan, and the Philippines, for example. Nowadays there are lots of female athletes such as the famous golfer Seri Park or the Korean women's short track and archery teams.

Gender discrimination is a major obstacle against the development of Korean society - or our world's society. It's important that, in the 21th century, men and women become as equal as possible. It's true that men and women have different strengths and weaknesses, but they're alike in more ways than one. To build a bright future for all of humanity, men and women must work together. We have to understand and help each other in order to achieve what we desire.

It's wrong to think that women are lowlier than men. Women didn't choose to be born as women, and they can't do anything about it. But women have their strengths, just as men do. People should be appreciated for who they are and what they do, and not be judged by gender.

Swearing

By H.W., 12, Seoul, South Korea

Swearing. For some people, swearing is the last thing they'd want to do. But for others it's a habit, sometimes even an enjoyment. Here in Korea lots of kids swear as a joke and when they play with each other.
Swearing is downright wrong. It makes others feel awful, like you're spitting dirt in their faces. Swearing makes you look awful. Lots of kids think swearing makes them look cool. No. Don't get the thought into your head.
Don't swear. It's a dumb thing to do. Don't make yourself a bad looking person. Don't make yourself a stupid person. (June 2007)

Foster Kids

By Hope, 12, Rockwood, Canada

Kids all across the world are taken away from their parents.
I myself was in a foster home. It is very sad and hurtful because you are being raised with people you don't even know. I was taken away from my mom at 7 because I was getting abused. Plus she had a drinking problem. Now I have a good life now that I am adopted. I have friends and a wonderful teacher. I try hard not to think about my past life, but it is still very hard to give up my parents!!! (March 2007)

Foxhunting

By Kayleigh, 9, Stornoway, UK

I find fox hunting a very disappointing sport even though I do not reccomend it as a sport. The hounds do not know any thing but killing a poor innocent little fox. The fox hunters say they are a pest to them by killing their livestock. This is a lie. The fox doesn't know it is a pest, and ripping it into shreds won't help your farm, Croft etc. The hounds sometimes mistake a cat or dog for a fox and kill them. The owners of these pets demand money from the hunters for killing their companions but they do not give them a penny. In Ireland they first catch the fox alive put it in a plastic bag take it to a field and let it go so the hounds can chase it - sometimes the fox is lucky to escape. Tony is trying to stop this bloodsport by banning it. The fox hunters leave something behind after a kill...orphans.

Stop hunting!!! Go drag hunting!!!

Thanks for reading.

Go foxes!
