  Friends

What should I do?

By Angel, 13, Jamestown New York, USA

My friends S and M don't talk to me much
any more. They are too busy hanging out with each other
like they are attached together. They say they are best
friends but I'm not in the best friend category, I always
think that maybe they hate me because I'm half white
and half indian. They wont listen to me and I'm scared to
say anything to them because I'm afraid they will ignore
me even more then they do now. What should I do?
Please help me I don't have a clue of what to do. Bye. (November 2004)

In .the Scenery

By Nicole, 12, Potomac, Maryland, USA

Standing in the background watching everything go by.
Seeing other people as they laugh and cry.
No one dares to talk to me, not unless they have to.
They just ignore me and act like I'm not there.
While I'm watching.

No one hates me, no-one likes me.
They just see me as the scenery.
They know that I won't leave my spot behind them, so they feel no need to acknowledge me.
While I'm watching.

But then someone reaches out a hand and pulls me into the crowd of friends.
I feel like a stranger, but everyone acts like they know me, as if I've always been there.
No one makes a mean face, they're all much nicer than I thought.
Maybe we all had the wrong idea about each other, maybe we're not so bad after all.
While I was watching.

Apart

By Amanda, 13, New York, NY, USA

I've gotten to know you and understand how you feel.
But now you had to move and the only thing that's real,
it's getting hard to talk to you or even see your face.
I can't imagine anyone who could ever take your place.
You're the only one I can trust with all my heart.
And no matter how far you may go, we will NEVER be apart.

Backstabber Friends

By Rachel, 15, USA

I had these two friends. I will not dare to mention their names. No. Not on a public website. But I feel if I don't share my true feelings with someone and soon, my head with explode with agony.
So... here goes nothing...
My two ex-friends (who remain nameless) are the true people who seem like they'd be nice at first, but turn out to be backstabbing distrustful little witches. The kind of people everyone despises.
These two people in particular are what make the world a terrible, tragic place to live in. They make the world terrifying.
They started out so friendly, so sweet, and mostly honors students... so smart and bright.
But by the time these two people got together, talked, and started to be mean to me, I was forced out of the picture. What they did to me was like a gunshot... with the bullet piercing through my heart.
The pain was slow but torturous. I never want my friendship to be that way again.
These two people abandoned me and left me feeling all alone and helpless. I felt unwanted and uncared for. I had to face the facts... life was unfortuanately not fair as of then.

But I have learned to overcome those heartbreaking, lifechanging obstacles and to get through hard times such as those. I have learned that some people are sweet on the outside (like an apple) but nasty and sour on the inside (like an apple gone bad)
But I have met other people and formed other friendships since that awful, dreadful day.

And those of you out there who are in a bad situation such as that, just hold on and keep in mind that things are going to change and good times are yet to come for you.

I feel horrible!

By Kaite, 9, Fayetteville, NC, USA

One Saturday, I had come home from my riding lesson, with another girl, N. Later that day, my two best friends, S and E came over. N made fun of E's hearing aids and E said she wanted to go home. S then got mad at me because I didn't stand-up, but I didn't know until today. I had stood-up for E when they left. My mom also told me S didn't want to be my friend anymore. I feel horrible! I'm crying right now, and I know I need to apologize to E at school tomorrow, and I will. I had invited E over earlier today, because my mom didn't tell me until after school, and I still want her to come over, but I just can't call her, I feel way too bad. I need advice! I want to be friends with S again, because I really miss her. I just don't know what to do. Please help. (October 2004)

Uh - oh

By Joni, 9, Milton Keynes, England

Uh-oh. My two friends, T. and J. are arguing again. And this time it's no gentle teasing. No. This is DEADLY.
I don't see how it started, really. When we were in First school, they were good friends. But now we've all moved op to middle school, oh dear. They are enemies.
Now, T. and I have been friends for a long time, and seeing I'm good friends with both of them, it's hard for me.
When I'm playing with J., she says "I HATE T. Don't play with her." And when I'm playing with T, she tries to steer me away from J.
What can I do?

On the outside

By Natasha, 14, Germany

I watch and listen but never join in
Im ignored and unwanted by all
I walk down the corridor alone and miserable
My thoughts protected by a brick wall
Sometimes I try to be like them
Laughing and pretending in my head
Occasionally I try and talk to them
But just end up alone again instead
They don’t seem to know just what its like
To be another face with no name
Once one of them tripped me up
And the rest just laughed like it was a game
It seems as though no matter how hard I try
No matter what role I play or who I've been
I cannot squeeze through the small gap of freindship
So I remain outside, looking in.

New Friends (Last Year)

By Sara, 10, North Reading, MA, USA

I crumbled up the remains of my snack and threw it in the bin. The worst thing about elementary school is you get no privacy, I thought.
I was true just this morning I was writing in my journal whan Chris looked over at it. Good thing I was only writing a personality test and not something he could tease me about.
I studied my fourth grade room, looking for someone I could talk to. Ever since fourth grade has started I have really not had a best friend. All my friends like Elisabeth, Kaitlyn, and even Olivia had been put in different classes.
Try not to think about it, I thought.
So I wandered to my seat where I dug into the work page we were suppose to be doing. I was next to Austin and don't say I was very happy about that.
In what seemed like hours Mrs. Scalisi summond us to the door and led us down to the cafateria. I groaned, it was nacho day and I didn't like the school's nachos.

After purchasing my lunch and a snack of a Twix Bar I sat down at almost the very end of the table.
But then I heard a crinkle like someone had taken a piece of paper and crumpled it up. I looked up.
Emily had sat next to me.
"Hi," I said.
"Hi."
We sat in silence. "Why do you you bring a notebook out to recess?" I asked her breaking the silence.
"Well," she replied. "I am sort of writing about fourth grade. In this notebook…"
"Kind of like a journal?" I asked.
"Yeah."
We kept chatting until we had to line up. Then Emily played with me at recess.
I had made a new friend.

Now I am in fifth grade and Emily and I are, sadly, not in the same class. I still hang out with her and we still play together at recess. But that is how I met her in fourth grade.

Life is too short

By Elle, 11, Nottingham, England

One friend is another's
So really you can't ever fall out
Because we're all best mates
If you think about it
So go on, make up
Because you're one popular person
So go on, make up
Because life is too short.

1 year apart

By Tezza, 11, Halifax, UK

Hi I'm Tezza. I've fallen out with this girl fore one year now and I want to make friends again. I have sent her two letters. She hasn't replied to any of them. We fell out because she threw a spider at me. I'm terrified of them. She knew that.
But just since a couple of months ago I've picked up 3. They were only small.
I've said some bad things about her but I regret it and I really want to be friends again. I don't know what to do.
I don't have the guts to go to her house. She only lives over the road. She never comes out because I'm out. I wrote saying she could come out. And a couple of days later she came out!
Please if you have any ideas reply to this!!

"Real"

By Brittany, 15, Wilmington, Ohio, USA

Always rejected and never loved
These are the things I get most of
I thought I had friends
But I guess I was wrong
At night I cry myself to sleep in song
Being lonely isnt easy
But I've learned to deal
Being alone most of your life
Lets you know what's real

If I...If You

By Megan, 14, El Dorado Hills, CA, USA

Iif I closed my eyes
would you remember the color?
And if I cut my hair
would you remember the length?
And if I changed my voice
would you remember the last?
And if I started crying
would you remember my smile?
And if I disappeared
Would you remember my style?

If you closed your eyes
I would remember they're blue
and if you cut your hair
I would remember the curls
and if you changed your voice
I would remember the sweet sound
and if you started crying
I would remember your smile
but if you disappeared
I'd lose everything.

Friends

By Nikki, 13, Michigan, USA

A friend is a person you should be able to look up to,
a person you can trust, hang with and talk to.
A true friend does not lie about who they are going out with with and are always at our side,
A friend is a person you should be able to call on the phone, tell them your problem and they say they understand.
Friends can help you out even more then you may know and it does not matter, boy or girl, a friend is a friend and a best friend is forever.
