Second Cousins by Virginia Hamilton

By Veronica, 12, Knightdale, North Carolina, USA

Hi, My name is Veronica, I have just finished reading Second Cousins By Virginia Hamilton. This was an Okay book, with a very simple plot, and was very serious, and had no suspense. I would reccomend this book to anyone who enjoys realistic fiction boods that show african american History. I think that this book could have been better if there were more problems, and it was longer because the author left you in suspense. In conclusion I did not think this book was complex enough but would be great for children in lower grades(especially girls). thanks for reading. (December 2005)

Shabanu: Daughter of the Wind; Suzanne Fisher Staples

By Elizabeth, 13, Raleigh, Wake County, North Carolina, USA

I read the book, Shabanu: Daughter Of The Wind by Suzanne Fisher Staples. It was a GREAT book! I LOVED it! Its about a girl that lives in Pakistan. She has many challenges just like girls in the U.S. She has to decide if she's going to follow her heart or protect her sister. I recommend this book to girls ages 12 to 15. Girls around those ages should understand and would be able to connect with Shabanu easier. On a scale from 1 to 10 with 10 being the highest, I'd rate this book a 10.5. The author keeps you interested. Its a real pageturner. When you first start reading it, it's VERY boring but as you get into it, its a great book! I'm ready to read the sequel! Read the book...it's a MUST read! (December 2005)

Flour Babies By Anne Fine

By Kasi, 13, North Carolina, USA

Do you like a book that is funny, heartbreaking, and leaves you in suspence?? Well the book I read is the one for you. In the book the Flour Babies, the author Anne Fine gives detailed descriptions of every event that occurs.
This book is centered around a boy named Simon Martin. He has just entered a new school and has to participate in a flour baby project. He has to take care of a sack of flour for three weeks. During this whole ordeal, he begins to treat his sack of flour as if it was a real person. Simon becomes very attached to his baby, and will not let anyone else take care of her. During the project, Simon starts to figure out his own life. His dad had left him when he was younger, and now the effects of that are showing. Simon everyday wonders who is dad really is and why he left him. When Simon has to give up his flour baby at first he is very upset, then becomes happy. He now conciders himself free of his problems, because when he got his baby he wondered about his dad.
This book was one of the best I have ever read. I would recommend this book to kids between the age of 12-15, because the text is quiet challenging. If you ever have nothing else to do, just go to the library and pick this book up. It will be hard to put down. (December 2005)

Nancy Drew - Teen Model Mystery by Carolyn Keene

By Natalie, 13, Wake County, USA

Nancy Drew-Teen Model Mystery was a great book that was full of suspense and mystery! Throughout the story I stayed anxious to keep reading and solve the mystery. The story was about a teen model named Cindy who had gone missing. Nancy Drew was on the case of solving the mystery. There were many predictions as to what happened to Cindy such as: kidnapping, running away, and getting in a car accident! There were many different profound suspects that were willing to hurt Nancy to throw her off the investigation. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys mystery novels and is over the age of fifth grade because of some word choices. You can find this book at your nearest library along with many other books in the Nancy Drew series! (July 2005)

Horrid Henry Stories by Francesca Simon

By Max, 9, Chorley, Lancashire, UK

Horrid Henry is a 10 year old boy who lives with his Mum and Dad and younger brother Perfect Peter.

Henry would love to spend all his days watching T.V, reading comics and eating junk food. His brother Peter however likes to do exactly the opposite, therefore being Mum and Dads favourite son.

Each story in the series follows Henry as he tries to get his own way by whatever horrible means he can, and this rarely goes according to Henrys plan.

I like these stories as they make me laugh and also make me seem well behaved.

I am a Leaf by Jean Marzollo.

By Suzette, 20, Jamaica

This book is designed to help children get an early understanding of reading and science. It is written by Jean Marzollo and colourfully illustrated by Judith Moffatt . The text and the illustration works together to amplify each other.

By just reading the title of the book one would reaal want to know the life a tree. Well this leaf actually lived on a maple tree with other leaves. As the seasons changes so does the leaves. Sometimes the leaves are being touched and these leaves liked to be touched by the sunlight, because the sun helps the leaves to make tree food.

This book is very lively and have a colourful layout to stimulate learning. Therefore I would recommend this book for children of pre-school years to grade one. Because at an early age they will be exposed to the nature of science and have a love for books.

Warriors: The Darkest Hour, By: Erin Hunter

By Crackerpaw, 11, Cissna Park, IL, USA

Warriors was a great series, but the last was my favorite. I can't wait for the next few books to come out. But, like I said, the 6th was the best. It scared me how Scourge killed Tigerstar in one move. All nine lives too. Too bad Ashpaw didn't become a warrior. He was my favorite. After Graystripe left, but then he came back, and I was soooo excited. These books were depressing to me. Bluestar went crazy, that was weird. I wanted to laugh so hard whenever she called them traitors. After I read the sixth book, I realized she lost her loyalty life. These were great books, like I said. And if you can tell, my name isn't real, but it is my warrior name, well, apprentice. (July 2005)

The Beach House, James Patterson

By Kayla, 12, Knightdale, North Carolina, USA

Hi, my name is Kayla. I have just read a book titled The Beach House by James Patterson. It was a great drama book, and a little mysterious. Peter Mullen was murdered but no one knows who killed him. Jack Mullen; Peter's brother finds clues through out the book about who killed his brother. I reconend this book to high schoolers and adults. The story is to complex for anyone younger and somethings are more for adult eyes. I believe The Beach House is one of the best books I have ever read by James Patterson. Read The Beach House to find out what happens and who killed Peter.

The Secret Garden, Frances Hodgson Burnett

By Stephanie, 13, Raleigh, NC, USA

The Secret Garden was a story with mixed emotions and a great ending. Even if you aren't into emotional things this is still a great story. When I first got the book I thought that I fall asleep reading it until I got to the part that her maids and others maids started to die off then I realized i could not put the book down. As I started to read farther and farther so many questions started to pop into my head like what is she going to do now that there is no one left and her parents are dead.I spent all my free time and more reading this book just find out what would happen, who would she meet, where would she go, and what would she do. Now that I am done with the book I have recommeded it to all of my friends and family and now I recommend this book to you and all of your friends because this is a book you would not want to miss out on. The Sky Is Falling trilogy by Kit Pearson

By Colleen, 14, Canada

I love The Sky Is Falling trilogy. It's about a girl called Norah and her younger brother, Gavin. They are sent to live in Canada from England during World War 2. Since it's so dangerous, their parents send them to live in Canada until the war is over. They live with the Olgilvies. That family consists of Florence Olgilvie and Mary Olgilvie. Mary is Florence's daughter. They live with them for all three books (The Sky Is Falling, Looking at The Moon, The Lights Go On Again). It is an amazing book, funny and sad. It's sometimes so intense you can't put it down or sometimes it'll make you cry. (May 2005)

Private Peaceful by Michael Morpurgo

By Emma, 13, Northumberland, UK

Private Peaceful tells the story of a young private in the First World War as he looks back on his past one night. Thomas, or Tommo as most people call him, lives at home with his mum and 2 brothers; Big Joe and Charlie.

Tommo's life is simple and peaceful, until the day of the horrific logging accident in which Tommo's father is killed. After that day, things just seem to keep getting worse. Tommo has his first day at school and meets a girl named Molly, who he loves, only to have her taken away from him by his brother Charlie, Big Joe goes missing, Molly is kicked out of her home and Charlie is sent off to war. Charlie asks Tommo to look after Molly. Tommo knows he has to prove to everyone that he is not a coward, so even though he is underage, he joins up with Charlie to be sent off to war, not realising what trouble lay ahead. Private Peaceful comes to a shocking and dramatic ending which will change the lives of the Peaceful family.

This is one of the best books I have ever read. It is not just about war, so don't be put off by the title. I would give this book 10/10, as it made me feel as if I was actually there.

Girls Under Pressure by Jacqueline Wilson

By Suzanne, 11, Blyth, Northumberland, UK

I think that Girls Under Pressure is a brilliant book because it reviews on how girls usually think they're fat and diet like crazy but in actual fact they're skinny. I like the bits where Nadine and Magda are always on hand to help Ellie because that shows how good friendship is. (May 2005)
