A Mysterious Night

By Jamie, 10

You run to the door and push the lock like a speeding bullet! You slowly step backward to your bed. The door shakes like it's going to burst. A terrible shriek comes from outside your door. Thunder and lightning roar outside your window. With every flash, your heart skips a beat. After the third flash, you hear a terrible BANG!! The doorknob rolls under the bed.
You walk slowly towards your door. Scared like you're in freezing water, you look through the hole and see.... a hammer. Someone's holding it. You slowly pull open the door and... your little brother, with the hammer.
'Oopsizies!' he says. You can feel red growing on your face. 'Don't scare me like that!' you say.
'We're home, and quit yelling up there!' yells your mother. She comes up holding a flashlight and groceries. Another flash lights up your room and ... you wake up.
Mother's calling you for breakfast. You hurry down the stairs. After you eat, you get ready and go to school.
When you get home, mom and your little brother are gone. A note on the refrigerator says...

2:20
Went to get groceries.
Help yourself to a snack,
Then do your homework.
Love, Mom
P.S. Watch out for thunderstorm
Warnings!!

An Ode to Summer

By David, 10

Summer, a blast of joy.
Blasts of sunlight,
Blasts of heat.
Running around,
Feeling so satisfied.

Oh summer,
I'll always love you.
I see, a boy.
He's running around.
I realize that boy is me.
I miss you summer.

I can't stand living without you.
Your beaming smile,
Makes me feel so bright.
You help get the most out of fun.
You are so magnificent.

Summer, a blast of joy.
Blasts of sunlight,
Blasts of pride.
I appreciate you very much.
Thank you summer,
you are finally here.
Now the fun,
Has just begun.

She Burbled and Gurgled a Bubbling Brew

Now Sue Pea Sue is 102 and only known as Soupy Goo

The Story of Henry Dare
By Emily
Young Henry Dare went to the fair,
He saw a young woman patting a mare,
She winked and she blinked with all her might,
For some strange reason this filled him with fright,
And Poor Henry Dare fell down the stair and thus is the end of Henry Dare

an ode to lily

By Jake, 11

There once was a silly old fellow
His hair was a bright colored yellow
He knew but one word
And everyone heard
The word that the old man would bellow

I said to a star
How do you travel so far?
And it said 'kind sir
I won't be a blur
But personally I enjoy car.'

There once was a land called blah
And each person there had a dew claw
Each day Mayor Ives
Would give 300,000 high fives
And that was the nation's great flaw.

Ode to My Scooter

By Jacob, 11

My scooter
Is awesome
I grind
And jump
Speed fast
And try
To go backwards
One hand
No hands!
Wheelie
Way cool

My scooter
Is like
Another person
A friend
Who makes me
Feel free
It goes up
In the air
With me
I turn around
Land
Darn!
I didn't make it.

My scooter
Is my talent
Ready, set, go!
Up
The ramp
Down
The street
Glide
Spin around
All the way back
Cross the line
YES!
I win!

Tanka Poems

By Ellen, 10

Rain

Dripping from the sky
A sweet, fresh scent all around
Cool drops on your skin
The dark sky gets heavy fast
Pattering on the sidewalk

Spying

We watch, studying
Seeing all the neighborhood
Observational
Laughter escapes easily
Noticing smaller details

The sky

Baby blue and smooth
Wispy clouds are snowy white
Black birds soar in the air
Sun glowing very brightly
Changing; always on the move

S'mores

By Joan, 11 1/2

S'mores
Out by the dark sky
Warming by a warm fire
Warm faces all around
Roasting marshmallows for s'mores
Yummy goodness in my stomach

Dawn

By Brandon, 10

a highlighted snake on the horizon
eyes opening like the days door
coming to the west ready to set
disappearing like a ghost

eyes opening like the day's door
blinding light of the suns rays
disappearing like a ghost
never look at it

blinding light of the suns rays
colors appearing
never look at it
slowly darkening

colors appearing
coming to the west ready to set
slowly darkening
a highlighted snake on the horizon

Hooky

By Laura, 10

She didn't come or attend
she's probably with her boy friend
she didn't know about the dead end.
There's a twist there's a bend.

She's probably with her boy friend
he's dumping her I comprehend.
There's a twist there's a bend.
We'll have a heart to mend.

He's dumping her I comprehend,
It's over it is coming to an end
we'll have a heart to mend
it's a heart-broke e-mail she'll send

It's over it is coming to an end.
She didn't know about the dead end.
It's a heart-broke e-mail she'll send.
She didn't come or attend.

Water

By Ryan, 9

as you run through it it gives you a chill
wetting your legs, your face and your arms
cleans your hands
can easily relax you

wetting your legs, your face and your arms
it evaporates as the sun soaks it
can easily relax you
soaking it up is what people like to do

it evaporates as the sun soaks it
warms you or cools you
soaking it up is what people like to do
falls from the sky

warms you or cools you
cleans your hands
falls from the sky
as you run through it it gives you a chill
