More about gatehouses

A gatehouse was the first place friends were greeted or enemies attacked. In the vaulted ceilings of many gatehouses were murder holes. The guards up above would drop things through them onto the enemy below! This included everything from rocks to rubbish ... but very rarely boiling oil, whatever anyone may tell you.

A gatehouse standing on its own in front of a castle was called a barbican.
