Smoking

By Piper, 9, NY, USA

My mom started smoking when I was little and I did not understand what she was doing. She told me that it was not something that I should be concerned about, but I was. She quit for a while, but she started up again. I tried to help her, by throwing out her cigarettes. Then she quit again, then smoked again and I can't stop her. I am still praying for her. Pray for her too, please. Now we have a plan, she will only smoke when not around me, because it makes my asthma worse. Keep her in your prayers.

My First Trip to Fireworks

By Dominic, 6, Silver Spring, MD, USA

First we went to one of my dad's friend's house. We had dinner there and Liana and me swam in their pool. Then we left and went to see fireworks. We drove to where I, Dominic, had dance practice. It was near a Metro. The trains were full of people. Luckily, a man was getting off and let us take his seat. After a couple of stops we got off and got on another train. Then we were in a big hurry because fireworks were starting soon. We just followed where other people were going. Then we finally got there.

I had some cake. The fireworks were not loud at all. I had some water with me because I was thirsty. I drank the whole thing before it ended. And when I didn't know it it was over. We left and the trains were totally crammed. So we found our own little corner. There was nothing to do so our this guy started saying stuff like "Hey, does anybody have a good story to tell?" Finally it was our turn to get off. When we got to the car, I was so tired I slept the whole way back home. I didn't want to brush my teeth. So my dad said I didn't have to. I changed into my pajamas pretty fast. I was the last person to wake up in the morning. It was so fun.

The mouse that got out

By Amie, 10, Orland Hills, IL, USA

My mouse got of her cage. My dad woke me up, and he said, "the mouse was in my room, and now it is in your room. " He grabbed a piece of wood and blocked the door so that the mouse couldn't get out of the room. My dad said, "Don't knock over the board or the mouse will get out. Go back to sleep, you can get her in the morning. " I knew something bad was going to happen, so when my dad was getting dressed I looked for the mouse. I spotted her in the closet, then she ran to the other side of the room. She was under my desk. I called my dad, he brought me a box. She was trapped under the desk, I pushed the mouse towards the box, but that didn't work so we put food in the box. We tricked her into the box. It took about 10 min. to get the mouse into her cage. Finally we got her into the cage, and we put a book over the hole. That is how we caught the mouse.

Our Trip To Florida

By Daniel, 9, Cincinnati, OH, USA

One day we decided to go to Florida because I wanted to see Disney world. My dad said that we could go to see Disney world.

We drove to Dayton to and flew to Atlanta from Atlanta we flew to Orlando, Florida. At Florida we went and rented a car. We drove to Disney world. We booked a hotel inside Disney World. It rained hard the day we reached Disney World. My dad went to see a parade in the rain. Later that night he tossed his cookies!!! He was sick enough to go to see the doctor!

On the next day we went to Magic Kingdom in Disney World. We went on a lot of rides. My favorite ride was the African Safari. I also liked watching the Christmas parade. That night we waited and watched the fire works. The park looked enchanting as it was decorated for Christmas. At night we came back and saw the fireworks they were wonderful.

On the second day it was drizzling on and off all day. My dad was under his covers the whole day. My mom and I went to The Epcott Center to watch movies and shows. My favorite was Honey I Shrank The Kids. It was a three dimensional movie.

On the third day we went to MGM Studios. My favorite show out of all the things we did was watching the Jim Henson's Muppet 3D show. My favorite part was when they had a pie fight and they threw a pie at me. It was charming to see the streamers going everywhere. When we came out we saw a statue of Miss Piggy with her skirt torn apart!

We went to the sports arcade and played a lot of awesome games. Later that day my mom and I bought a humoungous Mickey mouse. I swam a lot in a gigantic pool which was triple the size of our community pool.

Later that day we left Disney World. We drove to a beach called Coco beach. We got a hotel room that over looked the beach. I could see the Sea Gulls and the sea from my bed. I collected over 100 shells. I played in the ocean a lot. I think Florida is an excellent place to go for a vacation because it's awesome.

Mathews Elementary

By Wanqing, 9, Austin, Texas, USA

Hi! I go to Mathews Elementry in Austin, Texas. Last year, my school was rewarded a Historical Landmark plaque because Mathews is a very old school. Mathews was built in the year 1916. That was even before my grandparents were born! Mathews looks like it's the oldest school in Austin but it's not because Mathews is the 3rd oldest school in Mathews. I hope I stay in Mathews because it is really fun. My teacher at Mathews is Mrs. C. in 4th grade. I really like Mathews!

My Ambition In Life

By Amanda, 14, Canada

Ever since I was 10 I wanted to make a difference in my life as well as others. Four years later and I still do! I have lived two completely opposite lives. When I was 8 my parents separated. I wasn't upset. I was glad I didn't have to hear them fighting. My two older brothers, my mother and I left my father one day when he was at work. I didn't visit him for a while and we stayed in a women's shelter: we didn't go to school. I didn't understand why. My mother told me that if I saw my dad he might try to take me away from her so I started to dislike him. About a month later we moved into our own apartment. I started going back to school again. I had to sleep in the same bed as my mother. But I didn't really mind.

One day when I came home from school there was a man at my house. My mother was smiling, for once she looked happy. They were holding hands. She and one of my brothers liked him but my other brother and I didn't. He always told me what to do, I was angry because he wasn't even my dad. Then we moved away to live with him in the country. I went to a new school. Met new friends. When we lived with him sometimes he would get angry and throw everything around in our house. My mother said he never once hit her, he didn't hit me either but she told me he was an alcoholic.
He was nice when he was drunk and funny but when he had over 24 beers he would turn mean (this didn't happen often) my mother would always cry and when I went to hug her she would yell at me.

Finally we moved into town without him. I still went to the same school. And we visited my father who lived in Quebec (we lived in Ontario). My mother worked as a waitress, she made pretty good money I guess.

Then she stopped working she said she had a leave of absence because she was depressed. She got child support and some other way the government sent her money. We only got new clothes when we visited my dad or when it was our birthday. my mother never got new clothes not once when she had extra money, which she seldom did, she bought us something. then she started going to her ex-boyfriend's house ALL THE TIME! She was never home.

My brothers started bringing their friends over and they went up to their room they would smoke pot one day they asked me to try so I did, then I started doing it with them. My marks at school went down and no one noticed. It seemed no one even cared. so I decided I didn't want to live anymore. One night my mom came home early and caught me smoking I decided I wouldn't do it again. She still didn't have a job we lived in a nice big house. We were warm but we didn't have food sometimes, I would eat two pieces of toast with peanut butter in one day, that was all I ate. My mother didn't even eat at all she is a little overweight anyways.

My mom and two brothers all smoked cigarettes; it gave me asthma. I haven't been to the doctors in a long time. Then my brothers and I asked if we could live with our father. I loved my mother but I couldn't live like that anymore. having no food, clothes, supplies for school nothing, and I always stayed at home alone. So my father said we could live with him.

Whenever someone asked me why we were moving away I told them it was because my mother wanted to go to college. I lied, I was embarrassed. Finally last summer we moved here to Quebec with my father and his girlfriend which I like a lot. And like I said before I am living a completely opposite life, we eat good healthy food and whenever we need clothes or something we get it.

It's amazing how different it is on the outside, but inside I feel the same. I miss and worry about my mother a lot and at Christmas we are visiting her. I still don't know what I'm going to do to change my life or someone else's but I'll figure out a way, now that I know the way some children are living. Well thanx for reading my story and whenever you feel you don't have something you need, think of someone that doesn't even dream of having that they just wish they could at least have clean water and warm shelter then you won't feel so bad.

My special camping trip

By Happy, 16, Hong Kong

Last weekend, I went camping with my friends. We were very happy. We brought all the things we need for camping in our rucksack. The sun was warn and there was no cloud in the sky. We also thought that day was the best day for our camping. However, the weather was bad when we were arriving in the destination.

First, it was raining slowly. We thought that it was no matter for our trip. We also wish the rain would stop. We hold the map and found the area where we could set up the tent. After an hour, the rain became strong and worse. We could only hide in the tent and waited for the rain stop. We were already no mood about our trip. We want went home as soon as possible because we were tried. The rain stopped but the time was 8 o'clock. The sky was dark, we could not see anything. So, we could not go home. Luckily, we brought enough food and camping tools. We could use the torch to see everything. We used the matches and branch to make a fire and cooked the food. After the dinner, we played games together. We already forget the unhappy thing.

The next day, we went home and we also thought this was a good experience in our life. We were good friends and we mustn't forget this special trip. (May 2003)

Being a twin

By Michael, 13, WI, USA

I am a twin. People think being a twin is all this weird stuff. Everyone think we have to dress the same and look the same. They think we can read each other's minds, or that we have some weird extra sense and when he is hurt I am hurt. But none of that stuff happens to me I am just an ordinary kid with a twin brother.

My brother Mitchel and I are normal 13-year-old kids. We are fraternal twins. We live in a small town in Wisconsin. We are the only fraternal twins in town. We are in seventh grade. I cannot read my brother's mind. Mitchel and I have some similarities like we both like sports. We have the same friends. We play on our playstation 2. We are both geniuses in school.

My brother and I are very different because he does more work then me. My twin brother is four inches taller than me and weighs 30 pounds more than me. I do not dress like my brother. We don't talk about girls and other stuff; I have friends that I'm closer with than we are. I really don't like some things my twin brother does. I like my younger brother and sister better as friends. My brother and I fight some of the time. I think my brother is a dork a lot of the time. Being a twin is not easy. Everyone asks me how my brother is doing as if I'm a psychic. How am I supposed to know? Why don't you ask him?

My brother wants a CD for Christmas and everyone thinks that I must want one too when I don't.

When I get old and have kids I hope that I don't have twins because it is hard, but if I do in could give them some advice. February 2003

My school project

By Otis, 8, Tottenham, London, UK

My project is all about India. I am quite excited about learning about this country because it looks colourful and when my teacher told us about our new project I though "oh no". But now i am interested because me and my mum have found some infomation on the net about it. And it's looking easy to do now. I know that this big building called the Taj Mahal is there too. I'm feeling a lot happier now. Dec 2002

Taking a vacation

By Monica, 8, Aurora, Colorado, USA

One beautiful Summer day I went to Hawaii. My friends and I enjoyed the beach and resting in the sun. After a lazy day at the beach, enjoying the hot sun, we decided to go for a walk and to our surprise, we saw a big erupting volcano! It was so much fun that we watched it for almost one hour. After that we decided to walk down and get a huge ice cream cone. It was such a nice day and the start of a terrific vacation in Hawaii, the big island. The end. Nov 2002

The Hong Kong English Verse-speaking Contest

By Gloria, 9, Fo Tan, Hong Kong

On Saturday 14th of May, we participated in the Hong Kong English Verse – Speaking contest. This was a very exciting event for all of us.
There were 3 groups; Group A, B and C. Jessica, Cameron and the younger performers from our school were in Group A. Rory and I were in Group B. As for Ka Chi and Nicole, {they were the older ones}, so they were in Group C.
The Group A contest started in no time. Jessica, Cameron, Wasim and Fahim did very well reciting their poems. Soon The group A contest was finished.
The next contest was group B’s contest. It was my turn. I was getting a bit nervous at that time. Rory had done very well reciting his poem. In no time, the group B contest had also finished and the winners from group A and B were going to be announced. It was a pity that Jessica and the others from our school did not win a prize. It was also a disappointment that Rory did not win a prize. I honestly thought they would. I couldn’t believe it! I WON!
Soon the group C contest had started as well. Nicole and Ka Chi recited their poems very well. In an hour the contest had also finished. There was another disappointment; Nicole and Ka Chi did not win a prize too. They did very well though.
I got interviewed later on, I can’t believe I am on TV!

I have to thank Ms O’Brien for all her hard work. She has also sacrificed most of her time listening, correct and encouraging us. May we all thank her for all her time and effort. (June 2002)

My weekend

By Sarah, 7, Abu Dhabi, UAE

I woke up at 6.30am, my sister woke up one hour later and that's when trouble starts normally.
She wanted to take my best stickers, but I would't let her, so the screaming started, that's when mum woke up and said that's enough get ready to go to the beach, we were so happy we forgot all about the stickers.

It was a hot day, but ideal for swimming. As my sister and I were going to swim we saw a dead bird in the water, we didn't know if it was dead or alive, we both shouted mum come here, then mum said it's dead we better take it and burry it somewhere.

It was the first time for me and my sister to see a dead bird, it was very sad, but also we enjoyed our day at the beach.

We learn something new everyday, life is full of new things still to learn. (June 2002)
